Bio & Interests
| Biography: | PROFILE: An accomplished Travel Photographer with forty years of self employed experience supplying work for publications of many types. I have built up a collection of my own photographs taken world-wide into a library of my own images from over eighty countries around the globe, from Australia to Zimbabwe, totaling over 90,000 pictures to date. QUALIFICATIONS: 1960 – 1965 - A five year photographic apprenticeship in the UK when I also obtained the City and Guilds Intermediate examination in Photography followed by three years at sea as a ship’s photographer during which time I attained Associate Membership of the Institute of British Professional Photographers (ABIPP) in Illustrative Photography, one of the youngest people in the country at the time to gain this qualification. MAIN WORK HISTORY: • In January 1982 I had expanded my Photographic Library sufficiently to run as a full time operation. Over the following 13 years I built up a national clientele of tour operators, magazine and book publishers, advertising agents and designers, all of whom bought images from my library for usage in their many and varied publications. Just a few of my clients included KLM Airlines, Saga, Thomas Cook, Kuoni, P & O, British Airways, National Geographic Books, The AA and BBC Publications, Dorling Kindersley, The Daily Telegraph. I also carried out specific assignments of travel photography for some clients but in the main I undertook my own self planned assignments to keep increasing the variety of stock photographs that would quickly be available to clients thus eliminating the need for them to specially commission a photo shoot. I had trained staff at this time to whom I was able to leave the running of the business whilst I was away overseas. During this period I also recruited the work of other travel photographers whose photographs were different to my own, in order to offer the maximum variety of pictures possible to my clients. • In the mid 1990’s with the industry’s rapid changes to the introduction of electronic storage and transmission of images, I took the opportunity to make a major diversion in my career and begin the distribution of my work through specialist sources and on-line agencies so as to leave myself more time to travel and take photographs. This has since proven to be successful as I now have much more freedom to do this leaving two specialist agencies (as described below) to handle the majority of the marketing of my work. I have continued to the present time along these lines with my work distributed via one photographic agency specializing in marketing my work in the United Kingdom while the other is a very major and entirely web based internet agency handling my sales in countries around the world. • During the last few years I have also enjoyed further diversifications such as selling my work as mounted, framed "fine art" pictures, including shots of famous visitor areas locally to where I live, here in North Devon. I have also undertaken illustrated shows to schools, which will include companies and organizations, talking about my work and experiences. For several successive years I have had a consultative position as Chief Photographer on the Visitors Guide to Bahrain magazine also involving some travel writing for the publication plus a fascinating and unusual assignment to The Yemen for the same publisher for his first edition of a new visitor’s guide to the country. |
