Sign the Photographer's Petition to the UK Government

PhotoLegal have placed a petition on the UK Government's Number10 website. Their petition calls on the UK government to enact legislation that would prohibit organisations from claiming intellectual property rights from people entering competitions. They ask the government to use Pro-Imaging's Bill of Rights for Artists as a model on which to base the legislation. UK residents and citizens can sign this petition.

This unethical practice carried out by countless organisations harvesting unlimited IP rights is destructive to the creative professions. To add your voice to those who wish legislation to be enacted to stop this abuse all you need to do is .....

Sign the Petition!

PHOTO CONTEST RECEIVES UNIQUE HONORS

The PGB Photo Award, the first European photo contest outside Great Britain, has scored the highest marks from the photography organisation Pro-Imaging for its respect for photographers copyright.

The international photo organisation Pro-Imaging reviews and sets standards for photographers’ rights in connection with photo contests all over the world. Sweden’s The PGB Photo Award has now received the organisation’s highest honor: ”the green light”.

– It’s of course flattering that The PGB Photo Award has become one of the first photo contests in the world to live up to Pro-Imaging’s tough demands. Complicated contest rules hardly ever put the photographer’s rights first, so we whole-heartedly support the work of this organisation, says Jonas Lemberg, founder of The PGB Photo Award.

Pro-Imaging has put together several requirements that photo contests need to comply with to be ”green lighted”. For a complete list of rules and regulations and to look at Pro-Imaging's test results, go to the link: http://www.pro-imaging.org/content/view/444/171/

The deadline for the contest is on the 4th of January 2009.

Speakers include;

Nicola Solomon, Finers Stephens Innocent

Nicola is acknowledged as one of the country's leading lawyers on law relating to photography. Nicola has many years of experience advising on all aspects of intellectual property for photographers including contracts, copyright, agency agreements, defamation, privacy, etc. She advises the British Association of Picture Libraries and Agencies, as well as numerous photographers, picture libraries and publishers.  http://www.fsilaw.co.uk

Gordon C Harrison

Gordon is a landscape photographer, specialising in the Scottish North-west Highlands selling fine art prints and various other photographic products via his website and through a range of outlets and galleries on the Scottish west coast. This has been his business since 1994 and prior to that he designed and wrote software for 25 years.

In 2005, Gordon became a member of Pro-Imaging, a web based international support & campaigning organisation for professional photographers, and in 2007, became a member of the Pro-Imaging management team. In 2007, Gordon proposed mounting a campaign against rights grabbing competitions. Since then he has helped Pro-Imaging construct a foundation for the campaign, the Bill of Rights, which was implemented in March 2008. He is also involved in the day-to-day operation and liaison with contest organisers and the media.

Chris Coe

Since turning professional in 1992, Chris has photographed landscapes, people, architecture, gardens, travel destinations and wildlife around the world. Most of his work is commissioned, for specific advertising and editorial projects, or for stock libraries. He has shot over 40 travel and coffee table books and undertakes commissions for a wide range of major multinational companies. His images have been widely published in newspapers, magazines and books, and his book ‘The Art of Landscape Photography' is a widely-used reference work. Chris is current working on a book called 'Creative DSLR Photography'.

In 2003, Chris founded the now prestigious international Travel Photographer of the Year awards. As a working professional it was Chris's objective to create awards, which provided a showcase for the best contemporary photography whilst respecting the photographers' copyright. He has taken a stand on copyright abuse and the more recently unrestricted licenses which make so many photographic competitions little more than a rights grab.

With his perspective on photographic competitions from both sides of the fence he is able to bring together the rights grab issue from both perspectives. http://www.chriscoe.com

Claire Takacs

Claire works as a professional garden photographer, based in Melbourne, Australia. After completing a two year Applied Photography course, she embarked on what was supposed to be a three month folio building trip to the UK and Europe. A year and a half later, she returned with an education in the wonderful world of gardens and their photography. Entirely self commissioned, it was a chance for her to begin making contact with the industry in which she wanted to work. For the past three years she has spent approximately six months of the year abroad, combining travel with her photography. She has had work published in several Australian and UK garden magazines, as well as work published by the National Trust. In May 2008, she won the title "International Garden Photographer of the Year" for her image of a couple crossing a bridge during a snow storm in a Japanese garden. After three years of working in solitary conditions, particularly in Australia, this was finally a chance for doors to be opened, contacts to be made within the industry, and for recognition of her work. She hopes the award will allow her to continue to do what she loves, photographing gardens throughout the world. http://www.takacsphoto.com

Jane Nichols

Jane Nichols is founder and co-owner of Clive Nichols Garden Photography and has worked with her husband, a leading flower and garden photographer for the last twenty years managing his stock library. (www.clivenichols.com). As a great supporter of the wider group of garden photographers, Jane went on to become founding chairman of the Garden Photographers Association (www.gpauk.org). Here she was closely involved in the development of the GPA's, members only annual competitions and exhibitions over a period of six years. As commercial viability of the events made it increasingly difficult for the GPA to continue the competition and exhibition, Jane teamed up with a number of other leading garden photographers including Andrew Lawson and Philip Smith to establish a new company, Garden and Landscape Photographic Arts, Galpa Ltd, specifically to run an open competition in this field. With a background in marketing, Jane bridges the gap between the needs of the commercial world and those of photographers also trying to make a living.

The panel is chaired by;

Nick Dunmur

Nick is a commercial and advertising photographer based in Nottingham for the twenty years he has been in business since attending Trent Polytechnic and completing the degree course there. Nick works for a number of national and international agency and direct clients and has been fully involved with digital since 2000.

Nick became involved with Pro-Imaging from its inception in 2004 as the duty list mum alongside the list-owners. The management team has grown as Pro-Imaging's activity has increased and Nick is now the Pro-Imaging representative on the newly-formed British Photographic Council (a coalition of all the major photographic trade bodies in the UK). In addition, Nick is a director of the Association of Photographers.

Today 1st August 2008 the Microsoft Corporation sent the following statement to Pro-Imaging.

Microsoft Corporation Statement

We are grateful to Pro-Imaging for raising its concerns about the use of photographers' works on the Iconic Britain website. Although this was only a short marketing programme, it’s always very important to Microsoft that we respect the intellectual property rights of others. We apologise that we have not lived up to our ordinarily high standards.

We have since taken steps to obtain the rights to use every image to be featured in the subsequent stages of the Iconic Britain competition. We also welcome the invitation by Pro-Imaging to discuss with them best practices when using photographs in similar competitions.

Pro-Imaging Response To Microsoft Statement

Pro-Imaging would like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation of the above statement issued by Microsoft. We have copied it to all our members who will, along with photographers worldwide, welcome Microsoft's aim to adopt best practices in similar photograph competitions.
