A mostly technical week, with a myriad of problems to solve and advice sought. Members were migrating their entire operating system from one computer to another, getting ACL error messages, installing Cat 5 cabling (or should they be future proofing with Cat 6?) making sure their iTunes library was the same on their laptop and on their office computers.
Other members told how they were using their iPhones, and advised a member who has three email addresses to read mail from. Lightroom had an upgrade that proved nearly impossible to download, and one member was getting persistent kernal panics. With advice from members it appeared that he had a faulty motherboard.
An Applescript expert offered to write scripts for members using Aperture, to help ease their workflow problems, and there was (yet another) discussion about the best make of hard drives for back up.
On the non-technical side, new 'Orphan Works' legislation is threatened in the USA, which threatens to effect every copyright holder in the world. A campaign is starting in the States. Also in the US a group of brides-to-be gave their thoughts about five wedding photographers web sites. An interesting read from the 'real world' of some members clients.
The Pro-Imaging campaign against bad competition rules has had another success, with Nikon Instruments agreeing to our criticism of their terms. Members were also reminded that a lot of the public items on the Pro-Imaging site (like the competitions campaign and this weekly digest) are available as an RSS feed.
The best Merchant Accounts for selling your work over the internet were discussed, as well as VAT on commission sales of prints sold in a gallery. The best wedding album design software was sought, in a thread that started a few weeks ago with the best quality albums.
One cycling mad member was asked to supply a photograph of a road race to a local newspaper (which is not his normal source of work.) When he pointed out that he would require payment, he was accused of trying to make money from his photography! It is exactly that sort of attitude that Pro-Imaging will continue to fight.
