Weekly List Discussion
Weekly Review to March 5th 2012

The week began on an upbeat note with one member pleasantly surprised that a publisher's request for use of an image for an author portrait in a book had come through with an offer of actual monetary payment!  The question was, how much to ask for? Answers came in quickly and, with some PI members able to offer a wealth of experience in the publishing sector, a sensible fee structure based on different levels of usage, print runs, international publishing rights etc was soon taking shape.

News of that Canon had confirmed delays on the release of the EOS-1D X was followed by the jaw-dropping announcement that Nokia had revealed a 41 MP cameraphone. One member reported that he had downloaded some sample images from the web and had to admit that they were 'reasonably good too'.

Problems with Colorburst RIP v 5.x and Mac Snow Leopard were the next topic of conversation. Several members had experienced difficulties, some going back to their previous OS backups when required to get around the issue. A debate then ensued on the merits of using a RIP when wide format printers have become so advanced. Some swore that RIPs should RIP - printing technology had rendered them obsolete, but there were other strong voices claiming that the benefits were still there, you just needed to know where to look.

With video becoming a ubiquitous feature on high-end SLRs, the next conversation  is a classic sign of the times - a member was about to do their first 'proper' video work - what add ons would they require? Advice on CF cards with high transfer rates and good quality, cutting-edge but cost-effective monitors soon came in. As one member wrote: "One of the values of PI is being able to find something out first".

Later in the week, one member had reasons to be disappointed with the results he was getting from his Canon 16-35mm lens. Would the Canon 17mm be the answer to his problems? Although he had read positive online reviews of the lens, he was especially keen to hear from fellow PI list members - "frankly I trust PI above all other sources," was the way he put it. Over the next or two detailed answers poured in, with members sharing their experiences with the lens which were broadly positive, with one or two all important caveats that could only be learned 'in the field'. Proof once more, if it were needed, that PI really is a fantastic resource for those who want access to quick, real-world advice and feedback from a dedicated group of highly experienced and professional peers.
