Weekly List Discussion
PI Weekly Digest to 22/01/12

The week began with one member bringing important news to the attention of the group - Adobe had announced a u-turn on a recent decision to cut short the upgrade path to the upcoming Photoshop CS6 release. Several PI members had reason to be grateful - in recent weeks some had made the upgrade to CS5 purely to keep open their lower cost upgrade path to CS6. A few phone calls to Adobe later and members were reporting on-list that Adobe had fully refunded them and confirmed that anyone who owns PS CS3 onwards would still qualify for a CS6 upgrade.

In the week that Wikipedia made it's high profile stand against the proposed US anti-piracy legislation, SOPA and PIPA, the subject of intellectual property rights was again the subject of much on list discussion. The Wikipedia blackout received mixed reactions - some initial support was followed by a robust examination and defence of the SOPA and PIPA bills. Rather like the ongoing public debate, this was then met by an equally detailed and compelling argument that examined the weaknesses of the bills, particularly in the sense that they potentially damaging the pro-copyright argument by being, or at least being portrayed as, unnecessarily draconian 'blunt weapons of corporate power'.

PI continued in it's occasional role as a news-feed for members with the posting of a link to an announcement that regional newspaper group Archant is to launch an online service to encourage the general public to send in their images for publication. Hand-in-hand with the announcement came news that the group was making photographers redundant at the same time. As can be expected, this went down very badly with members.

As ever, much of the week's traffic was on more prosaic technical issues. One member holidaying in Antigua received a rapid diagnostic consultation on a rather worrying problem with his Macbook Pro, while another wanted help identifying some suitable accounting software to use.

Towards the end of the week, iBooks Author, Apple's app for producing books for the iPad was discussed at some length. While the functionality itself was considered sound and allows creatives to make use of the iPad in some innovative ways, some members where irked that you would only be able to sell the book created via the iBook store. As one member commented, it's just another small step in Apple's takeover of the world…
