There have already been over 350 messages flying around the web between members, in just the first two weeks of this year.
Most correspondence dealt with the case of a broken Canon 1DS Mk3. One member reported that the sensor in his was out of alignment by 1.6 degrees! Most members agreed that any amount of degrees over 0 was unacceptable on a camera costing around £5000. There was further advice on where the cheapest reputable outlet with supplies was. And then the said member came back and reported further problems: noise on long exposures. (note: we avoid Mac vs PC or Canon vs Nikon debates on the Pro-Imaging list!)
The controversial photographer Richard Prince was discussed, after one of his prints reached a record price in auction in the US. For those of you who don't know what he does: he photographs details of other peoples photographs (such as a portion of a 'Marlboro Man' billboard) and then blows them up to an enormous scale. And then sells the print. For over three million dollars.....
Another nail in the coffin in the death of professional photography was announced with the launch of a new product that claimed it could do it all without any training or experience. It turns out to be a light tent with built in lighting and digicam, connected to a computer. Fine if you make a living shooting product shots for ebay, but otherwise? Most members reckoned their clients were above this sort of thing!
Advice was also sort on an amazing array of topics, from upload speeds using filechute, adapters to put a variety of lenses on Canon bodies, the best wireless mouse for a PC, make-up artists in Coventry, how best to import 65,000 photos into Lightroom, replacement batteries for a Mac Powerbook, and the best portable ringflash for photographing car interiors. Sadly, the latter was not to get the car at it's showroom best, but for post-accident shots, showing crumpled seats and victims.
Humour came to light via two web pages brought to members notice. One was "How to become a Photographer" (Step 4: Develop an outstanding portfolio. Include excellent photographs you have taken on your own.) The other had nothing to do with photography, just a charity fundraiser video of air marshalls disco dancing as they directed billion dollar machinery around the tarmac! Contributed by Simon Grosset |
