Lots of technical subjects this week, with one of the prominent discussions surrounding a subject close to every image maker's heart - Digital Asset Management. With more and more software options on the market and as some morph into RAW file processing, members world-wide gave full and frank opinions on the merits of the various systems. One thing became clear - whether you use Aperture, iView Media, Lightroom, Adobe Bridge or a home brewed system of your own, it seems there is no right or wrong choice and the discussion will continue for some time this coming week. The next most intense techie discussion involved the new 16-35 F2.8 Canon zoom. Is it any better than the old one, or indeed is it really worth double the asking price for the current, highly regarded, 17-40 F4? New owners gave their own opinions, together with several links to more formal technical tests. One of the many Apple Mac users wanted to order a new PCI card for the studio G5 Mac, but the System Profiler didn't say exactly which spec. Not only did he receive an answer to the question, but other members were able to point to a quite remarkable online resource that lists the spec. of every Mac built in recent years as it left the factory! International discussions continued about diverse technical subjects as fine art printing paper, remote access for your Mac when away from base and the discovery of possible technique for improving the visibility of Flash based web sites. Other discussions revolved around more equipment - is a cheap tripod worth the metal it's made of, or are you far better digging deep into your credit card and getting the carbon fibre Gitzo? Why does a Nikon D200 suddenly start eating its way through batteries as soon as the shooter inserts a 4 gig card? What are the best wipes for getting greasy finger marks off that expensive colour calibrated screen? Where in the UK to source a 44 inch HP Printer? The world-wide membership of Pro Imaging discusses topics like these on a daily basis, often with frank discussions on the business of photography and digital image making as well as the technical issues.
