Photographers from around the world will compete for prizes worth over £8,000 (US$12,000) when the increasingly influential Renaissance Photography Prize opens for entries on 21st October. Celebrity photographer Brian Aris, Christies’ International Head of Photographs Philippe Garner, renowned gallery owner Michael Hoppen, Magnum editor Brigitte Lardinois and Rhubarb Rhubarb’s creative director Rhonda Wilson will select 100 photos from thousands of entries to be exhibited at the prestigious Mall Galleries on London’s Pall Mall in March 2011. The shortlisted entries will be exhibited for one week, culminating in a celebrity private view on the evening of 23rd March 2011, where the winners will be Renaissance was founded in 2006 by Fiona Gifford, a 38-year-old lawyer and keen amateur photographer who was diagnosed with breast cancer aged 34. Having personally benefited from the care and support offered to breast cancer sufferers by the Lavender Trust at Breast Cancer Care, she wanted to give something back. “During my recovery period, day-to-day concerns became irrelevant, and I became more aware of the moments that really matter in life - moments of emotion, human connection, and wonder at the beauty of nature. What better way to represent those moments than through photography?” In the three years since its inception, Renaissance has raised over £100,000 for the Lavender Trust at Breast Cancer Care.
