| Weekly Discussion for 9th to 15th July |

This week on Pro Imaging we discussed: Where to hold our first non-cyberspace meet up. With the demise of the traditional film processing lab and associated coffee machine, many of us live a virtual world with little actual contact with other image makers, these days. Of course, with Pro Imaging being a global organisation, getting everyone together would be impossible, but to kick things off, plans are being discussed for an initial UK meet up at a studio somewhere to put names to faces and generally have a 'bit of a do'. An unusual business issue was queries by one member - how good is the Toyota Hi Lux? With UK company car issues and the regulations for 1 tonne pickups as business vehicles to be discussed, plus the need to carry ever larger amounts of kit to locations, would such a vehicle be a good tool for the job, or would there be security issues of securing the cargo area, with a more traditional 4x4 being more suitable? A more important business issue discussed was one of copyright infringement. How to deal with a quite blatant repetitive infringement by a high profile UK retail arm who really should know better was discussed. Technical issues included how to get a quality screen grab from a corporate DVD presentation using anything other than Grab on a Mac, plus a warning of a possible security weakness on the Mac remote access application "LogMeIn" with one member reporting that it appeared to be making 'phone home attempts' to another computer. Installing applications like Little Snitch allows the user to see how many attempts your computer is making to contact the outside world, but what many don't realise is that this is often a legitimate part of it's operation. Are we paranoid, are is everyone really out to get us? And the weekend off topic discussion revolved around that incident with HM Queen and Annie Leibovitz. The majority of opinion from the US side of the Atlantic was "Don't mess with the Queen....." And as for the desparate apoligies by the BBC, one member commented, "indeed. as frank zappa once said: there's a big difference between kneeling down and bending over!" |
