| Weekly list discussion summary |
|
The single biggest topic discussed on list this week was the outcry that had acompanied the Corbis competition and blatant rights grab and the response from Corbis. The general opinion amongst members was that changing the terms of the competition was the easiest way for Corbis to prove their intentions. You can see the responses and full discussion between Pro Imaging member Gordon Harrison and the staff at Corbis elsewhere on the site. The other big discussion concerning photographers dealings with large stock photography distibutors was the apparent climbdown by Getty on their $49 web use licence. A movement on their part to limit the licence to 3 months could be considered a climbdown by some. Pro Imaging members were more inclined to consider it being more akin the shark only eating half of you.....The negative impact on the Getty share price after negative comments by industry analysts was also a source of discussion as to why a company with such corporate savvy as Getty would do such a thing. The good old Nigerian Wedding Photographer scam is alive and kicking, it seems, with a barrage of requests for photographers to be paid far too much by a mysteriously generous chap who has a friend who needs some money sending.... Other business issues included queries on the costs of updating photographers websites and important discussions about exactly how this is priced and how to avoid being held to ransom by some of the less legitimate design companies out there and the quite remarkable outburst by a prospective wedding client who accidentally forwarded to the photographer an acidic comment meant for her future spouse. People really should be more careful with that send button.... Technical subjects included discussion on the new Canon 1DS Mk3 including speculation on worldwide pricing differences, together with the new Nikon D3 / D300 series. Some excellent resources for underwater photography were revealed by members worldwide showed the global reach of out organisation. For example, did you know there is actually a British Society of Underwater Photographers? Later in the week, the Corbis issue gained further momentum when Gordon Harrison received a phone call to his base in Scotland from Dan Perlet, Director of Comminications for Corbis in the USA. Both parties were able to put their point of view forward in what Gordon considered to be a productive discussion. The subsequent press release by Pro Imaging can be read in full here, together with links to comments by other stock photography websites. Back to technical issues and if ever there was a reason to join Pro Imaging, Mac users would be amazed at the Applescript writing prowess of website host Martin Orpen. His ability to write Applescripts for members workflow problems from a delayed train are becoming legendary. |
