What colour space should you choose?

We have recently been discussing colour spaces on www.pro-imaging.org in particular in relation to scans and how Adobe Lightroom defaults to using the ProPhoto colour space. 

Following on from this discussion I compared a scan from our Betterlight picture scanning set-up using the ColorThink software, and found that whilst Adobe RGB colour space held all the information with almost no wasted space, the considerably larger ProPhoto colour space was clipping some of the available colour information.

Finally here is a composite showing the same image in the ProPhoto colour space with the AdobeRGB colour space overlaid in white.Image
