This week over 20 different subjects were discussed, and advice from members sought. Computer advice included upgrading to Mac OSX 10.4.11, and its associated problems (or lack of them,) the best way to go about grabbing screen content, and converting sound files to MP3 format. One member told how he'd set up a secure wired network using the ring main in his house. On the purely photographic side of things, a member's request for the best way to produce a 'Warhol poster effect' in Photoshop was answered in under two hours. Another member wanted to know what was the best resolution for files going to his printer - should he change the resolution depending on the size of his print? The simple short answer is that it depends on your printer: Epsons seem to like 240dpi, while some HP printers prefer 300dpi. But there are of course longer and more complicated answers too! The difference in the behaviour of fonts in Photoshop, and design software like InDesign, was discussed, along with the best way of producing a pdf file that could be enlarged or reduced without loss of quality. Advice was also offered on using masks in Photoshop. Members are still coming to grips with Lightroom. While many are using it for Raw conversions due to it's simple interface (compared to ACR in Photoshop) others are finding it's cataloguing methods a mystery. This led to a discussion about the virtues of iView and whether it would continue to be many photographers preferred DAM software now that it had become Expression Media and owned by Microsoft. Two scams came to light. One was email based, offering photographic work photographing models, but from someone with a poor command of the English language. The other was web-based, with the SWPP providing links to some PI members web pages in a way that made it appear as though they were members and supporters of the SWPP. This was quickly reversed after a threat of legal action. There was more on copyright, with advice on registering your images with the US copyright office. One UK members plan to buy a new Canon 1DS Mk 3 from the States was reversed after it was pointed out that Canon's US guarantee was regional and would not be honoured by Canon Europe. Facebook reared it's head after a member read the terms and conditions that you had to agree to before joining (they own your soul for ever more it would appear.....) and while some would like to use it as a business networking tool, others advised against it. Finally, members learned about a year long project being undertaken in the Northeast of England, involving a Canon 30D, an artist, the changing sky and over 2000 images....
