Notification Letters

Organisers and sponsors of photographic competitions with rules that fail Pro-Imaging's rights tests recieve a notification letter sent by email conforming generally to the format listed below. Of course there may be some specific points of detail that vary depending on what is found in the competition rules.

Subject: Name of Photo Competition

Dear ???????

Competition Title

The above competition’s rules have been reviewed by Pro-Imaging, an international organisation for professional photographers, and the rules of the contest fail to comply with all the provisions in the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights for photography contests sets out in detail the rights that can and cannot be acquired by contest organisers and has now been adopted as an industry standard by organisations in the UK and overseas.

This review is part of our ongoing program of publishing consumer reports that highlight whether or not a photography contest’s rules are respectful of the rights of the entrants. Contests which fail to comply with the Bill of Rights are reported on the Rights Off List.

We make no distinction between amateur and professional competitions with regard to competition rules because such a distinction is not made in the law concerning intellectual property rights.

We compare a competition’s rules against the provisions set out in the Bill of Rights for photography competitions; the Bill of Rights can be read here –

We have created a report about the above competition; this can be read here –

http://www.pro-imaging.org/content/view/nnn/173/

If there is anything incorrect in this report we will be happy to correct it.

If you adjust the rules of the competition in response to this report please advise Pro-Imaging of your new rules. If the changes mean the contest now complies with the Bill of Rights Pro-Imaging will promote the contest on the Rights On List. The Rights On List is a resource to all the worlds photographers of recommended contests.

Due to the number of contests we process we are sorry that we are unable to enter into detailed negotiations with organisers about a specific contest’s rules but our reports provide comprehensive information to help you to review and adjust the contest rules to comply with the Bill of Rights. We have also listed below a useful set of links to aid you.

Kind regards
