PI weekly digest to 16th March 2008
Written by Simon Grosset

A seemingly quiet week, with less than 300 messages. There was, however, one overwhelming subject: PI's campaign against unfair competition rules. This raised a considerable number of messages, with members mentioning competitions they'd come across, names and emails of contacts in the photographic press around the world, and congratulations and thanks to the members behind the initiative.

Lightroom continues to raise issues, mostly with members having to change their habitual workflow away from Adobe's Bridge and Camera Raw. It seems that more and more members are switching to lightroom for their RAW processing, with Apple's Aperture being a poor relation.

The landscape/fine art photographer Peter Lik was brought to member's attention. Our own famous fine art photographer pointed out that the only thing remarkable about his photographs was the over use of the saturation slider - and the price! Other members pointed out that we as photographers are the world's worst businessmen, and, like Peter Lik, we should learn and perhaps embrace the marketing tools that the rest of the world uses. His web site features video of him jumping out of a helicopter and wading through the sea to photograph a beach umbrella planted on a tiny island of sand. Very Apocalypse Now!

Hard drives continue to raise their head. Many members are now archiving exclusively to hard drives and ditching DVD, and the question of the most reliable make was raised. One manufacturer offers a 5 year guarantee - but it was pointed out that this just meant they would replace the hard drive if it failed, not the data on it. Still, the fact that the guarantee exists points to the manufacturers expectations. As usual, the bottom line is: it's not if it fails, it's when.

Google analytics was discussed - and it's alternatives. Driving traffic to your online portfolio is now an essential part of every photographers life, and we have a member who is an expert on web sites and optimising them for the search engines. Welcome advice was duly provided!

Help with scanners,
Filemaker Pro, Leopard printing, sensor cleaning, UK telephone providers, and Profoto lighting equipment was all sought, and members responded quickly with their thoughts and own experience.
