Discussion list 14th April 08

Another high traffic week for the Pro Imaging list servers with queries old and new.

OK, so it's been asked before, but why would a perfrctly good LaCie drive that works just fine on one PC suddenly not run on a brand new one? Technology for the sake of it? And on the subject of data storage, just how long is it reasonable for a CD-R to last? And once it's gone faulty, what are the chances of ever getting any data from it?

Fast moving technology means thatt there are always new ideas arriving. So what it this week's best way to get a wireless internet connection when on location? Buy a dongle for 3G broadband? A good old GSM phone handset? Or find a Starbucks or a WiFi hotspot?

On a serious business note, a far east based photographer tells a rights-grabbing tale of woe concerning a North American client who wanted it all and expected high quality work and sweat-shop prices. The comments triggered a whole raft of discussion on ways for this member to ditch that client and find ones that can see the value of his work and appreciate his skills.

However, a very positive UK update on the Competition Campaign was that government agency One North East have agreed to amend their rules to reflect photographer's rights.

Back to the techie camera stuff mid-week and it seems that the Nikon D3 firmware upgrade was not quite ready and it was released and then very quickly withdrawn again....

And just to prove we like a bit of telly, the episode of The Apprentice on UK BBC that featured the 'contestants' becoming photographers came in for a very robust discussion....
