Competition Diary 5th May 2008

Listed below are the titles of the competitions added to the competition campaign lists since the previous diary update. Note that the Investigated List is still undergoing a substantial update to provide more information for each contest other than just the title and end date.

  1. Contest Name & end date.
  2. A Take Care notice alerting you to what you lose by entering the contest.
  3. The organisations involved in running the contest.
  4. Who the judges are. This week work was completed to extend the information about the judges by wherever posible hotlinking to biographical information and pictures of the judges. We took the view that entrants should know the background and experience of the judges.

Really good progress has been made in the above and all that remains is for a 'Take Care!' notice to be added for some of the older competitions.

Investigated List  NB This was subsequently merged with the Rights Off List.

Bill of Rights

We have had some feedback about our Bill of Rights since it was launched with some changes being proposed both by non members of PI and from within PI itself. During this week the admin team at PI considered all these suggestions, and those listed below are the changes that were appproved and incorporated within the Bill of Rights;

Competition T&C's should list all sponsors, affiliates and subsidiaries. This was a suggestion given to us by the Organisation for Photographers Copyright Protection. It is right that entrants should know all the organisations that may acquire usage rights to their images. It could be that the entrant may have concerns about particular organisations and would not wish them to have usage of their photograph.

The competition website should name all the judges participating in the judging of entries. A brief biography should also be given and from this information the entrant should be able to determine that the judges are qualified to judge the submissions.

Pro-Imaging discussed the production of a book or catalgue being produced by the competition organiser and publishing the photographs entered into the contest. We decided that this should be an allowable commercial venture that the organiser may profit from a long as all the published photographs were credited to the photographer.

For other commercial usages the Bill of Rights required rights managed contracts but didn't stipulate any duration. This was an inadvertant ommission and this has been corrected by stipulating that such contracts are to be subject to a maximum term of usage being two years from the date of announcement of the winners.

Other events

2 May 2008 The United Kingdom Royal National Institute for the Deaf (RNID) contacted Pro-Imaging about a photo competition they will soon be launching and to discuss their proposed rules with us. They wanted their rules to be fair to the entrants and to give them protection for the required usage. The rules only needed a few changes to ensure they would not be in conflict with the Bill of Rights.

RNID were very enthusiastic about this process and adjusted the rules. When the RNID competition website is launched this contest will be promoted by Pro-Imaging via the Rights On List and Pro-Imaging thank RNID for being the first contest organiser to approach us with regard to setting fair rules.

2 May 2008 A contact form for the competitions campaign was created to make it easier for people to provide Pro-Imaging details of competitions they have discovered. It also hides the email address from the spammers!
