Competition DiaryNote that the Investigated List has undergone a substantial update to provide more information for each contest other than just the title and end date.
All of the above is now complete apart from a couple of the oldest contests. This week it was decided to add a contact address for each contest such that just by clicking on it readers will be able to complete an email or contact form expressing their views of the contest to be sent direct to the contest organiser. We will continue to expand the contacts made available to our readers who can use them to contact organisers, sponsors, and judges to express their views on the contest rules. Several of the contests on the Investigated List already have an expanded range of contacts. If you would like to help in this campaign, just click on the contacts and send a message expressing your views about rights grabbing contests, and include a link to the the Investigated List and the Bill of Rights. Do just as many contacts as you wish with a standard message including the two links, it won't take long! Listed below are the titles of the competitions added to the competition campaign lists since the previous diary update. OTHER EVENTS
L’Oreal news from New Zealand 5 May 2008 PI recieved a note from the New Zealand Advertising & Illustrative Photographers Association (AIPA) about a contest that L’Oreal was running. It is a copyright grab. The rules have not been published, but AIPA sent us extracts from them so that we could produce our report.
Flickr & KeyeTV 6 May 2008 We received a note from a Flickr group member that the CBS 42/Precision Camera Photo Contest rules had been revised following his letter of protest containing references to our original critcism of the contest. PI had also posted commentary in the Flickr group that was protesting about the contest. Subsequently the Web Manager, Sousa Williams, for KeyeTV posted a response on the Flickr group forum. Sousa detailed in the post the changes they had made to the contest rules, removing the copyright grab clause, and replacing it with a 12 month commercial grab which allowed them to profit from the images as they wished. The Investigated List was updated with new criticism as a result and PI posted to the Flickr group a note that we had done so. Unfortunately KeyeTV left other pages concerning this contest unchanged and on them they are still claiming copyright of all the images submitted!!
British Journal of Photography News 7 May 2008 The British Journal of Photography published a news article about Pro-Imaging's criticism of photography contests, specifically The Assignment and Canon Fan Foto. In the article Canon say they are concerned about the issue and will be revising the contest rules. The full story is on the BJP website.
A Readers Suggestion 8 May 2008 One of our contributors, Maggie, pointed out our lists were getting very text dense and suggested it would be better if the list just contained the contest titles, and by clicking on them all the details for the contest would appear. We think this is a great idea, thanks Maggie! We are looking at this but at the moment we can't say when it will be implemented. We will report back on this subject later about our plans when we have them worked out, so please, in the meantime bear with us while we contine to add contest after contest to our lists, there are just so many of them! In the meantime we recommend you use your browsers 'find' facility to search for the information you are looking for in the list.
Law Firm on Notice 9 May 2008 Pro-Imaging notified a U.K.national public institution that their photograph competition has failed the Bill of Rights on several counts. The email provided the detailed reasons for failure. A copy of this notification was sent to the sponsor of the contest. The sponsor is a multi-national law firm specialising in intellectual property rights. If we have not heard from them before 16 May 2008 the contest will be added to both The Investigated and The Rights Off List.
Judge Complains to Pro-Imaging 10 May 2008 A judge for one of the competitions reported on our Investigated List contacted Pro-Imaging to complain that his contact details were shown in our competition report. He claimed it was an invasion of privacy and wanted his details removed. Pro-Imaging responded by stating that the details we published about him were also displayed on the competition website. We also noted that worldwide there are far too many rights grabbing contests for Pro-Imaging to write personally to every organiser and judge, and so we provide contact information that is already publicly available to enable the public to act on our behalf. We also said that it is often the case that judges and organisers are not aware of the implications of the contest rules drawn up by lawyers, and providing the public with the information and the means to contact them will bring the concerns about the contest rules to their notice. Pro-Imaging hope organisers and judges will react favourably to information provided by the public and act accordingly. We hope that judges will walk away from contests that don't comply with the Bill of Rights, and that organisers will change their rules.
The Death of Commercial Photography, Hello Photo Contest 12 May 2008 A Google alert found an interesting discussion on a Philippines Photographers forum, the discussion is entitled "The Death of commercial photography, hello photo contest. " and in that discussion the Investigated List was referred to by Nathaniel Salang, thanks Nathaniel!
