How to use The Rights Off List

The Rights Off List  lists organisations promoting photography contests that don't meet all the standards set out in the Bill of Rights For Photography Competitions.

Click on any organisation in the list to see their 'Rights Off Report' which will list all their Rights Off photography competitions.

Information shown on the Rights Off List

Note that the organisation titles as shown in this list are made up as follows -

Organisation name *, Country, Gov, Cha, NonP (count)

Organisation Name Some organisations trade under a variety of names. In these cases the name is written as 'Business name t/a trading name' where 't/a' stands for 'trading as'. This ensures that all trading entities for the one business appear grouped together in the alphabetical Rights Off List.

Note that organisations that have competition terms and conditions that claim copyright, or waiving of moral rights, or exclusive rights, will have an asterisk following their name.

Country This is the country in which the business is located. For multi-national corporeations it is the country in which the headquarters are located.

Gov The legend 'Gov' appears in the organisation title if the organisation is partly or wholly funded by public money. This applies to government departments, government agencies, local councils, regulatory authorities and any other organisations wholly or partly funded by governments using tax payers funds.

Cha The legend 'Cha' appears in the organisation title if it is a legally constituted charity.

NonP The legend 'NonP' appears in the organisation title if it is a non profit organisation.

(count) The final element (count) indicates the number of Rights Off contests listed in this organisation's Rights Off Report.

Note that Country, Gov, Cha and NonP are each immediately preceeded by a # in the organisation title, this enables searches (see below) to be restricted to the Rights Off List.

You are strongly advised to carefully check the terms and conditions (rules) of any photography competitions run or sponsored by any organisations named on the Rights Off list.

How the List can be used

There are four controls that you can use to get information from the Rights Off List.

Filter This input box can be used to find an organisation in the list just by entering its name, or part of its name. The filter scans the titles in the Rights Off List list for matching entries and lists the matches.

You could use the filter box to list all the Rights Off Organisations in a particular country by entering, for example, '#Utopia'. Of course you will not find any Rights Off organisations in Utopia but you may well find them in other countries.

You could also use the filter box to list all organisations that have competition terms and conditions claiming copyright, or waiving of moral rights, or exclusive rights. They are all identified by an asterisk following the organisation name so all you need do is to enter an asterisk in the filter box and hit enter.

Order This drop down menu lets you choose how the list should be sorted.See below for more detail.

Display This drop down menu lets you choose how many organisations are displayed at a time to suit your screen size. The Rights Off List is split into a number of pages depending on the display number you choose and you can navigate to different pages by using the page control at the bottom of the Rights Off List.

Search This is a powerful tool that can be used to search our entire website, or you can limit its search to the Rights Off List and Rights Off Reports. See below for more detail.

The Filter and Display controls are straightforward and easy to use. More information is given below about how to use the Order and Search Boxes.

Ordering the List

By default organisations on this list are listed in alphabetical order, and you will see 'Title asc' appears in the Order window.

The drop down menu provides four other sequences that you are free to use, these are -

• Title Desc: this reverses the default order and lists organisations in reverse alphabetical order
  
• Ordering: this lists the organisations in the order they were added to or updated in the list. Therefore those added or updated recently will appear at the top. If you haven't looked at the lists for a while this order would let you see the most recent changes at the top of the list.
  
• Hits asc: This lists the organisations such that those with the highest hit rate appear at the top of the list.
• Hits desc: This lists the organisations such that those with the lowest hit rate appear at the top of the list. 

Searching

The 'Search Pro-Imaging' box is designed to search the entire website, not just Rights Off information, but you can do searches that will be constrained to Rights Off information only.  We tell you how to do that in the next section below but read this searching section first.

Note the search box is limited to 20 characters.  You can enter a phrase, words, or parts of a word, then press enter on your keyboard.

This takes you to the search screen which offers further options that you can use to refine your search. By default the search will find all items that contain any of the words you entered. You will see on the search screen that you can exercise finer control on the search and two further options are offered.

All words Choose that and the search can be repeated to find only those items that contain all the words you entered.

Exact Phrase Choose that and the search can be repeated to find only those items containing the exact phrase you entered.

Searches restricted to Rights Off Information

Searches can be restricted so that only the Rights Off List and Rights Off Reports will be examined.  This feature is restricted to searches concerning sponsors, countries, charities, and publicly funded organisations such as government agencies.

Sponsors 

If you want to find out which organisations on the the Rights Off List have been supported by a particular sponsor enter into the search box the sponsors name in this way;  #Sponsors Name

It is very important that you enter the # symbol immediately preceeding the name. The # symbol restricts the search to the Rights Off List and Rights Off Reports. If you omit the # the search will search our entire website for every reference to the sponsors name.

Countries 

If you want to find organisations in a particular country that are promoting rights grabbing contests enter the country name into the search box in this way;  #Country

As before it is essential that you enter the # symbol to restrict the search to Rights Off information.

Publicly Funded Organisations 

If you want to find publicly funded organisations that are promoting rights grabbing contests enter the text Gov into the search box immediately preceeded by the # symbol.

As before it is essential that you enter the # symbol to restrict the search to Rights Off.

Charities & Non-profit Organisations

If you want to find charitible organisations that are promoting rights grabbing contests enter the text Cha or NonP into the search box immediately preceeded by the # symbol.

As before it is essential that you enter the # symbol to restrict the search to Rights Off.

Combinations

You can combine all of the above into complex searches of Rights Off information. For example listing all the publicly funded organisations in a particular country that are promoting Rights Off photography contests. Just enter your combination and press enter. This will take you to the search screen where you can refine your search as described above in 'Searching The List'.

These comprehensive search features will become particularly helpful as the Rights Off List grows. Sadly it is expected to become extremely large.
