A sample of the subjects discussed this week
The big technical issue this week was using Canon's flagship 1DS III camera with Capture One Pro, the RAW processing software used by many professionals. While the software will process the files, it can't be used with the camera tethered - and using Mac OSX 10.5 only makes the problem worse. Capture One promise a solution later this summer.
One member who shoots landscapes wanted to know how good Canon's 14mm lens was. Many members feel it's just too wide for a full frame sensor, and suggested he look at their 16-35mm zoom instead.
A Nikon D3 seemed to be having focussing problems, and it turns out that Nikon head office (in the UK) are the only people who can do anything about it - their authorised repair centers can't touch it.
Advice was sought on the best diesel cars for photographers (economical - but with the 'right' style,) the best insurance companies, and the best place to buy legitimate and original, rather than fake, compact flash cards.
Within minutes of a member commenting that he couldn't "merge to HDR" in Lightroom as he can in Photoshop, another member came up with a plug-in that does just that, at minimal cost.
A note of sadness entered the week, with the announcement by one member that he was leaving the discussion group. A very highly respected member, he retired from full time professional photography a few years ago but was always willing to share his experience and knowledge with us all. Sadly, he has now decided to focus his energy on new non-photographic pursuits. At least one person will benefit - his long-suffering wife!
It wasn't all doom. A Swiss member announced that if any member was visiting his country for Euro '08 they should give him a call - not that he had any tickets! Contributed by Simon Grosset
