PI Weekly Digest to 29-6-08

A busy week on the email front, and surprisingly very few of the 259 messages were to do with technical or software issues.

Monitor calibration raised it's head, again, with the consensus being that EyeOne hardware with BasicColor software was the best bet. And a member who was worried that Photoshop CS3 wasn't going to work now that he'd upgraded to OSX 10.5.3 was told that he needn't worry. And he was reassured that, in his case, he needn't go down the complicated route of downgrading to 10.5.2...........

How to sell prints? That was one of the major discussion points this week. Many members spoke of their disappointment in trying to sell via their own web sites, and others spoke of their poor results when selling through 'print sales' sites. Others spoke of their success selling via art fairs and exhibitions, and one member with his own gallery confirmed the necessity of allowing customers to physically see prints hanging on a wall.

One member asked how we all approached family portraits - whether in the studio or on location. Did you charge a large fee up front, or did you make the money by selling lots of prints? And how much should you charge for prints? The 'Venture' business model was much discussed.

A request for examples of bad architecture led to the usual suspects being mentioned, plus other buildings not known by all. Hot spots, dongles, iPhones and iPods - and the pros and cons of the different providers - were discussed. Lastly, PI has been asked to join the new British Photographic Council, and plans are afoot for a meet of members sometime over the summer, possibly in a deserted village in north Wales! Become a member now and find out more!
