PI Digest for the week to 3/8/08
Iconic Britain and associated threads: No doubt about the major topic on PI (and many other forums) this week, the Iconic Britain competition. Here you could use Microsoft's Live Search facility to search for images, any you thought were "Iconic" could then be entered. PI members kept finding their images offered without any attribution or indication of where they had been found, this competition using our imagery to promote Microsoft's Search Engine without any attempt to credit, obtain permission or link back to the originating site. E-mails and Invoices started to fly, soon PI's Competition Bill of Rights SuperScot (Gordon Harrison from the PI admin. team) was on the case. All of the Judges pulled out and by the end of the week it was announced that Microsoft are meeting with PI, looking to ensure that future competitions meet the PI Bill of Rights.
It will be interesting to see the outcome of the meeting, hopefully a further boost to PI's Competitions Bill of Rights, also let's see if any of the members who have invoiced MS get anywhere?
Charities: A couple of this weeks threads have concerned working with Charities, one regarded supply an image for participants company mag, should you charge?, the other was rather more complicated, being presented with a contract demanding all rights and more, after doing the job, which was also at a charity price as well. Backed by advice and support from the PI Membership the member successfully negotiated a sensible agreement.
Charging for ftp'ing: Some of us charge, some include it in Post Production, some think it's part of the job.
Adobe pricing again: Lightroom II's pricing shows a major increase for buyers from Europe. You can get US pricing by buying from a dealer over in the US.
Off the shelf web design: A few alternatives for simple web galleries were suggested
The breadth of knowledge amongst the membership is often one of PI's strengths, this week a question about the specification of a black background as requested by a printer led to an answer by a pre-press specialist which may have prevented an embarrassing and expensive problem, together with a question regarding an unusual use of Photoshop's Type Tool which also was quickly answered.
Orphan Works Bill: PI's US members are keeping us up to date with the attempts to pass this legislation and their attempts to block it. This effects all photographers! Contributed by David Williams
