PI Digest Week Ending March 15th 09

The week kicked off with a discussion about fees for portrait sessions and how
to succeed against certain sales techniques used by some high
profile studios, such as the Venture operation in the UK. Several members
contributed presentation techniques to ensure good sales.

Is modern portraiture fashion driven?  A number of members felt that this "fad"
will be replaced by something more notable and honest soon.

LED lighting was discussed.  What does it offer...what are the snags?

A member needed help with the best way to shoot someone from underneath in
a safe and realistic way.  Ideas for around the world to ponder.  Suitably strong
glass or Perspex was a strong contender.

Is copyright a lost cause and should we be considering a more viable alternative
strategy for the future?  No,  it's only that the big boys want to take it from us!

G4 Powerbook battery issues were discussed and how to tell how many
recharge/discharge cycles they have been subjected to.  Beware of buying
cheap batteries, they will and do explode.

Need a laptop location case?  Always an interesting discussion as we all seem
to have our favourites.

A member from the US with a background in writing computer training books
pointed us to some interesting speed tests using a range of computer systems
and this led on to members exchanging the results of their own speed tests.

Firewire adapters for Macs was the concern for some needing more physical
space between outlets.  It seems that some designers of these items never
actually work in the real world!

Remember Duratrans?  A member needs a source of supply of the modern
version.  Contact details of a lab within striking distance is suggested.

Want to be a photographer's assistant?
One of our members wants to spend a
bit of time assisting with the aim of seeing how others run their photographic
businesses.  Lots of discussion and some useful suggestions were offered.

Other subjects included the best way for tethered EOS 5d MkII working.
