A relatively quiet week (must be the school holidays beginning) with discussion on numerous topics. One of our more technically minded members reported that Google have made a few changes to their image search algorithm, which means it can now find creative commons pictures, but ignores any copyright attributes. Google continued to be discussed as one member looked to change the company he hosted his web site with. The cheaper option was in the USA, but would having his UK site hosted abroad make any difference to Google finding him and keeping him on the front page of its results? Various members contributed their experiences, and the result was that you can't out-think Google! Away from technical matters, a member in China was getting fed up with clients ringing up and asking for his prices, despite the fact that they are published quite openly on his web site. It seems he is not alone as other members revealed they have the same problem with potential clients wanting more for less. More members experience was revealed as the best satnav systems were discussed. They all seemingly work - until you want to upgrade them via a Mac, or want to contact customer support. That's when the differences emerge! One piece of good news: a leading US attorney has lent his support to our competitions campaign, to stop organisers stealing rights from competition entries. Working for charities? Why is it that they 'assume' photographers will work for free, when other suppliers charge full price? Finally, after yet another report of police interfering with an innocent photographer taking pictures on a UK High Street (he was suspicious because he was "too tall") one member revealed that he no longer called himself a photographer because of all the negatives associated with the term nowadays. Members immediately piled in, both in defence of the word and profession, and in suggesting new words to describe our profession. Contributed by Simon Grosset - Q Photography |
