List Summary - 5 June 2007

This week on Pro Imaging, we discussed:

Business issues.

This week's most discussed business topic was wedding photography and how to charge for it. With more wedding guests possessing hi- resolution digital equipment, wedding photographers really need to switch on their professional skills and create images the guests can't no matter how flash Uncle Eric's new Nikon is. And with re- print orders diminishing in some areas, the discussion focussed on ways to maintain profitability and still provide clients with value.  Wedding photographers from around the world discussed differing methods of marketing, pricing and presenting their work.

Still on the wedding topic, one North American based member recounted his recent dilemma with a naughty guest. The four year old who deliberately shoved over his tripod, complete with Nikon D200 and  flash. Do you lose your cool, give the parents the bill, or simply  say "No problem, I've a spare" and keep shooting. As a professional, what would you have done?

Do you really want a five year buyout? That was basically what one member was wondering when a list of usage for a stock image landed in his inbox. Sometimes, clients need a little help when it comes to Rights Management and we discussed ways to give the client what they need, without breaking the bank and while protecting the creator's intellectual rights.

Technical Issues.

The new Apple MacBooks are pretty cool, but are the glossy screens really any use for client viewing? And will the RAM hungry little beasts play quality resolution video previews in a clients office?

Additionally there were a whole raft of technical issues. The real -  time speed of discussion on the
list means that members can ask for global help when confronted with such diverse issues as trying to create a password protected folder online, Mac volumes that won't  mount without a system restart, why will the studio's LaCie monitor  not work after simply moving rooms? And the shrill scream of terror as a member discovers a faulty Compact Flash card after the shoot.  And yes, he rescued his work with PI member's assistance.

The weekend OT discussion was mainly concentrated on the various differences between Swedes and Swiss, after one member made a gaffe about nationality.   Apparently the blonde hair thing can be a bit of a  myth.....
