A very busy week on the Professional Imagemakers discussion list, with an equal number of questions seeking technical advice as those seeking business and working practises advice.
On the technical side, the award for the most esoteric question came from a member who wanted the terminal command to force empty the trash on his Mac. It was rather full and insisted on counting the number of files before complying. The member had lost patience after it was still counting after he had had a nights sleep!
Video discussion is becoming much more common now that the Canon 5DMk2 is out and about. Members are coming to grips with Final Cut Express (FCE) and Pro (FCP) and helping each other sort problems out. This week the size of an individual frame (for use as a still) was discussed, putting movies on an iPod touch and making levels adjustments in FCE were discussed.
Another member wanted help getting to grips with CMYK conversions, while one wanted to know the best photo app to use with an iPhone. Members also had difficulty with flash galleries in Lightroom, colour differences in photos viewed in different applications, drives not mounting, adding captions to web gallerries generated with Bridge, the best way to set up a 90 day time-lapse photography project, and opening Nikon NEF files in an old version of Photoshop - all solved quickly with advice from members.
On the non-technical side, members asked about the excess liable on their insurance policies, the right to privacy, the availability of a densitometer (a member had a spare one he could offer!) and whether cameras bought in the USA were covered under warranty back in the UK.
One member has already ordered the new Leica M9 and promised to review it for the membership, while a certain camera repair shop was recommended for a lens repair. Pro Imaging members now have as part of their membership, full access to the Aardenburg Imaging & Archives web site information on independent paper and ink longevity testing. They also have the option of having their own paper/ink combinations tested. PI is the first organisation to take out a corporate membership with this independent testing authority. Finally, the membership failed to provide the answer to one photographers problem: he had a stethoscope to record horses heart beats on, but it output data via Infra Red, and he wanted some way to get that into Quicktime on his Mac. Since he lives in the Middle East without easy access to some of the gizmos recommended, I fear we failed him! We welcome new members who meet our entry requirements, so if you like the sound of what we talk about and our campaigning efforts for professional photographers, please visit the Join Us section.
