A very quiet week - in PI terms - on the list this week, with only 46 emails on a varity of topics. On the non-creative side, much respect was shown to Brian Duffy, who died this week. One of our members used to work with him, and many others remembered him through the recent BBC documentary about his life. Unfortunately, technical problems were to the fore this week. They varied from advice for a cheap second monitor for Photoshop palettes, to the best microphones for DSLR video cameras, recommendations for firewire hubs, and the best software for automatic backups. Shooting on white backgrounds invariably involves retouching, and one member asked for the most efficient way to ensure that whiteness - and was promptly answered with a multitude of processes. Finally, one member had been commissioned to shoot a photograph, involving a 2+2 family and car, on a petrol station forecourt. Was it safe to use big portable studio lights? Should he just use reflector instead? Or small portable flashes? Lots of advice followed, but given that the shoot was in the Middle East, it's possible that some of the legal 'liability' advice was redundant! Compiles by Simon Grosset / www.q-photography.co.uk |
